PRESENTATION OF A PETITION TO THE KAIPATIKI LOCAL BOARD FROM THE LITTLE SHOAL BAY PROTECTION SOCIETY (Inc).
The petition wording is that:
“We, the undersigned, oppose the proposal to install adult fitness equipment in Little Shoal Bay reserve and respectfully request the Kaipatiki Local Board to revoke this proposal.”
The petition was run primarily through the Society’s (new) website, with some secondary input from petition sheets. Of course, many people did not know of our website, or of the petition and so did not have the means to contribute.
The results of these two modes are attached and total 126 names. Numerous comments accompany the names on the website returns and, we believe, offer a host of very strong reasons why so many people are opposed to the project.
Without diminishing the importance of any of those comments there is one we believe should be drawn to your attention. It is from a Doctor – Craig Panther, who is involved in sports medicine – entry number 13 on page 4.
As Members will also know, there has been widespread and ongoing opposition to the Board’s proposal as indicated by the Society’s two surveys and by the various letters which many have sent to the Board Chair, and sometimes to all Board Members.
In addition, there have been letters to the newspapers and the matter was recently taken up by a newspaper columnist.
Taking into account the net number of people who have indicated their opposition to the project, either through those surveys, or through the petition, at least 224 people have registered their opposition by these means, quite apart from those who have registered their disapproval by the other means mentioned above.
In view of the ongoing opposition and the extensive reasons given for not proceeding, we respectfully request the Board to review its earlier decision and revoke it.
Thank you for receiving this deputation and considering the people’s petition.
